Want to learn to ski or snowboard?  Everyone 7 years and older – even adults – can during January, Discover Michigan Skiing Month!

Note!  We are working on the Discover Michigan Skiing program for January, 2024 and will have updates on this page soon!

Ski areas across the state team up with Michigan McDonald’s restaurants to offer an affordable introduction to the sports of skiing and snowboarding. This program is for people 7 years and older for skiing and 10 years and older for snowboarding.

  • Choose to downhill ski, cross-country ski or snowboard
  • The price is just $60 per beginner session (except where noted below). ONE SESSION PER CUSTOMER PER LESSON TYPE. (You may take one downhill ski session, one snowboard session and one cross-country session.)

  • Ski or snowboard rental
  • Beginner lesson
  • Beginner Area lift ticket or cross country pass

Mackinac Island ~ Twilight Turtle Trek ~ January 1, 2021

A lantern-lit ski and snowshoeing trek through some of Mackinac Island’s natural winter wonderland.

The trail begins at Greany Grove (corner of Arch Rock Road and Huron Road) with a bonfire and hot chocolate. The trail is groomed, track set, lit by lanterns and approximately two miles long.

This is a free event sponsored by Mackinac State Historic Parks, Mackinac Island Community Foundation and the Mackinac Island Ski Club.

Boyne Highlands ~ Community Appreciation Day ~ January 10, 2021


In appreciation of your local patronage and support of our resorts and operations, Boyne Highlands Resort is pleased to offer a full day of FREE skiing/snowboarding and more to residents of Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, and Otsego counties on Sunday, January 10, 2021. FREE access to the downhill trails at Boyne Highlands, plus the parks, pipes and cross country trails at our resort are available 9am to 4:30pm.

Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, and Otsego county residents need only show their driver’s license or other form of identification with proof of residency at the resorts’ lift ticket windows to receive a FREE lift ticket for the day. Ages 15 and under can ski and snowboard free during Community Appreciation Day if accompanied by an adult with proof of local residency. Community Appreciation Day lift tickets are good from 9am to 4:30pm. Many other specials and discounts are offered to residents of Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, and Otsego on January 10.

Boyne Highlands ~ “The Sizzler” Slopestyle Competition ~ January 16, 2021

For our second annual Bourbon & Bacon Bash, we are changing up last year’s hot event to a slopestyle throwdown. The Sizzler is open to all skiers and snowboarders who want to go all out for the sake of bacon and giveaways. This is a judged event and top finishers will walk away with some great prizes like Plath’s Meats bacon, BOYNE gift cards, and SWAG.  The Sizzler will be a fast moving competition with music, an announcer, and various divisions based on the number of entrants. Each rider will get two runs and the opportunity for bonus points by hitting “The Sizzler” bacon feature located at the base of the Lower Heather Terrain Park.

Spectators are welcome so come on out! Join us to watch from the base and enjoy a mouthwatering pig roast and a bar. We will have music, a bonfire, and visits from Huey The Highlands Pup to make for a fun – and sizzling – afternoon on the slopes.

Schedule of Events: Saturday, January 16

  • Event Registration: Pre-registration online is currently closed. Please register from 1-2:30pm the day of the event at the bottom of MacGully Terrain Park
  • Participation Fee: $20 | $10 with PEEPS Pass (collected on site)
  • Open Practice: 1-2:30pm in Lower Heather Terrain Park
  • Rider’s meeting: 2:45pm at the bottom of Lower Heather Terrain Park
  • Pig Roast and Bar: 2pm
  • Slopestyle Competition: 3pm in Lower Heather Terrain Park
  • Awards: 5pm (estimated) on hill at bottom of the terrain park, immediately following event
  • Open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages, participants under 18 must have a a parent/guardian present at on site registration to sign the waiver

Sizzler Awards

  • 1st Place: 5 pounds of pepper bacon & 5 pounds of cajun bacon, provided by Plath’s Meats; BOYNE gift card, swag
  • 2nd Place: 3 pounds of bacon provided by Plath’s Meats; BOYNE gift card, swag
  • 3rd Place: 3 pounds of bacon provided by Plath’s Meats; BOYNE gift card, swag
