Mackinac Island Cross Country Skiing
The Mackinac Island Ski club grooms trails on the east and north side of the Island in Mackinac Island State Park.
The cross country ski trails wind through the pristine woods of Mackinac Island State Park and allow the winter visitor to see all of the natural and historical landmarks of the island.
You can follow the ski trails to the interior of the island and take in the vistas from the highest point on the island at Fort Holmes. Or ski through the woods to Arch Rock and enjoy the view of Lake Huron from the bluffs on the eastern side of the island.

Day 1: Landed in Detroit, hit the road 🚗, and ended the day watching the sunset at Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Day 2: Ferries, bikes, and fudge on Mackinac Island, plus the breathtaking Pictured Rocks.
Day 3: Drove north into the Upper Peninsula, hiking through Pictured Lake State Park — where mirror-still waters, pine-lined trails, and fall colors made it the perfect finale 🍂✨

A few weeks ago, we took our first (and only) trip of the year, a little birthday getaway up north, and we’re still feeling full from it. It was such a magical weekend!🍁
Three days of wandering and wonder:
Day 1 took us through autumn leaves and by quiet lakes with beautiful views and a peaceful car picnic by Houghton Lake. Our favorite experience of the day was a walk through the old-growth forest at Hartwick Pines. We were excited to see Lake Huron as the sun was beginning to set and settle into a room at a cute 1928 schoolhouse for the night.
Day 2 started a little early as we were excited for our visit to Mackinac Island. We took the ferry under the famous Mackinac bridge, rode in a horse-drawn carriage around the island, stopping at the highly photographed Arch Rock and learning about the island’s Native history. It didn’t matter that it was raining all day, we soaked up every bit of joy (and some famous fudge too).
Day 3 brought us home through the “Tunnel of Trees” a popular stretch of road in Michigan for views of Lake Michigan and gorgeous autumn leaves. It was rainy, golden, and full of color! We searched for Petoskey stones, watched the waves roll in like the ocean, and stopped at every scenic overlook we could.
Our weekend trip was slow and simple and so needed. Life has been busy and heavy in a lot of ways, but this trip reminded us how healing it is to pause, explore, and make space for joy together.
We came home tired, happy, and deeply grateful, and even now, weeks later, that feeling hasn’t left. 💛
