Mackinac Island Cross Country Skiing
The Mackinac Island Ski club grooms trails on the east and north side of the Island in Mackinac Island State Park.
The cross country ski trails wind through the pristine woods of Mackinac Island State Park and allow the winter visitor to see all of the natural and historical landmarks of the island.
You can follow the ski trails to the interior of the island and take in the vistas from the highest point on the island at Fort Holmes. Or ski through the woods to Arch Rock and enjoy the view of Lake Huron from the bluffs on the eastern side of the island.

A friend and I recently took a trip to #mackinacisland at #grandhotel The first whole day I felt so much guilt, knowing there were so many things going on at home. I was shocked there were no cars, and we had to take a horse to the hotel. Eventually I got used to the stillness and it cared with me back home. Save this for a day when pausing feels difficult. 🤍

Super Bob Adventures — Episode 15: The Grand Hotel Time Trip
No cars on Mackinac Island? No problem!
Super Bob flies his buyer in over the water straight to the Grand Hotel — past the horse-drawn carriages, right to the longest porch in the world, with the flags flying. This is the Somewhere in Time hotel, and it still stops people in their tracks.
Whoa — hold on! On the porch, the buyer leans too far over the railing for a photo and slips. Super Bob has them firmly by the hand, calm and grinning.
Timeless, sold, and right on time — that is Super Bob, and it is the lesson underneath the fun: know the place you are walking, keep a steady hand on the people in your care, and never let a showing turn into a surprise.

President Ulysses S. Grant signed the bill on March 3, 1875. Wikipedia says it was largely the work of Sen. Thomas W. Ferry, a native of the island.
The park got no federal money. The commander at Fort Mackinac ran it, and his soldiers served as caretakers. To pay its own way, the park built roads and trails and leased small lots.
In 1895 the federal government handed the park and fort to Michigan, and it became the state's first state park.

We had to wait a couple of days for inclement weather to pass to make our trip to Mackinac Island count; not the excursion you want to spend sheltering from the rain. The day we wound up going was perfect and we enjoyed a full day of Island life. This was also our first visit to Lake Huron. A wonderful destination to visit!

The first time I discovered the Secret Garden was in May 2018 while photographing Grand Hotel’s gardens for the coffee table book, “The Gardens of Mackinac Island.” I was hooked! Now I go back every season to witness the changes.
If you haven’t been there yet, add it to your bucket list. The garden is hidden in the cedars behind the Tea Garden.

November 3rd marks four massive moments in Michigan history! In 1911, Louis Chevrolet and Billy Durant launched the Chevrolet Motor Car Company in Flint, setting off a revolution that reshaped the auto industry. In 1926, the Upper Peninsula faced tragedy with the collapse of the Barnes-Hecker Mine in Ishpeming, marking the state's deadliest mining accident. Decades later in 1972, Mackinac Island approved a referendum allowing snowmobiles during winter, making them the only motor vehicles allowed on island streets. Finally, in 2001, Spartan Stadium hosted the controversial "Clockgate" finish, where Michigan State edged out Michigan 26–24 on a zero-second touchdown pass. What’s your favorite November 3rd memory? Mackinac ends in C—but the sound ends in “aw.” Why? Lock in A, B or C. The name came through an Anishinaabek word associated with the “great turtle,” then a French spelling whose pronunciation stayed with the island.
