Aspirus Returns as Title Sponsor

Aspirus Ironwood returns as title sponsor for the fourth year. Aspirus is a health care system headquartered in Wausau, Wisconsin, with 8 hospitals and numerous clinics in Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In Ironwood, Aspirus includes a 25-bed critical access hospital, a family medicine clinic, eye care clinic and more. 2017 saw the opening of a 42,000 square foot clinic adjacent to the hospital. The clinic brings a variety of services under one roof, including family medicine, cardiology, therapies, surgeons, cancer care and much more. It includes 63 patient rooms, a high-tech community meeting room and a Starbucks coffee and gift shop. Aspirus has been named one of the Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the U.S. for the past four consecutive years (2015, '16, '17, '18) by the National Rural Health Association. This is a tremendous recognition! Aspirus Ironwood is the only organization in Michigan to have received this recognition consecutively. Aspirus was also recognized as a "50 Critical Access Hospital to Know" by Becker's Hospital Review.

Their vision to serve as a catalyst for creating healthy, thriving communities makes them a perfect match with SISU Ski Fest. Aspirius Ironwood stands behind and supports the racers, organizers, volunteers and communities who all make this race a reality and success in the middle of a U.P. winter. You will see their crew at aid stations, serving food at the expo, and helping out at the Finnish Line again this year!

SISU 2019 Overview
Our best SISU yet!

The SISU 31K & Heikki Lunta 15K distances and course introduced in 2017 remain for 2019. Auvinen's Hill has had another upgrade this summer and is now a nice gentle curving superhighway down the final hill into town.

The ski races begin on ABR's expansive trail system, continue on City-owed public trails, and end in downtown Ironwood. There are no double loops and confusing criss-crossing, Highlights include an exhilarating start down the old Popple Plunge, the scenic hills of Hautannen Highlands, the mentally challenging railroad grade heading towards town, the twists and turns of Miners Memorial Heritage Park, and the final Ks past Hiawatha into town. It's about half hills and half flat terrain, usually covered in our wonderful natural lake effect snow and Pisten Bully groomed as well as humanly possible by the skilled groomers from ABR.

The Hauska Heikki 5K Fun Ski is also back and will be a timed noncompetitive event again this year.

The Depot Dash youth event returns on Friday to kick off the weekend. Equipment, snacks, campfire and instruction provided at this free event for kids 10 and under.

Our Expo has grown to over 25 vendors and will include our 2019 tee shirt and other memorabilia celebrating our 10th year. An exhibit showcasing the blizzard of 1938 and the history of skis will be held at the Ironwood Memorial Building in conjunction with the expo.

Sunday will offer a Fat Bike Event. The SISU Dirt Crew is still deliberating what form this event will take. We will keep you posted!

An exciting course, scenic beauty, premier grooming, and friendly volunteers
will all be back in 2019!

We will again offer a Post-race Party of pasties, mojakka (Finnish stew), awards and awesome door prizes at the Ironwood Memorial Building immediately after the race. Have a great race, enjoy the company of fellow skiers for a while, then have some down time before evening dinner and partying.

Our After Party at the historic Ironwood Theatre returns Saturday evening. Back by popular demand, Conga se Menne will headline the entertainment! This UP band has regaled us in the past with their Yooper regge and songs like, "The Heikki Lunta Song!" (guess who's coming to sauna?) Enjoy a libation, share stories with fellow racers, and cut the rug for the perfect ending to your exciting day. FREE to racers and the public alike!

Our New Website will provide you with up-to-date information about SISU '19. Thank you Emily Burchell for designing a more modern, user-friendly website. Check it out and tell us what you think.
