Hanson Hills

We Need Your Help To Preserve Our Lodge!

Hanson Hills has a rich history of providing quality recreational opportunities for all types of user groups all beginning in 1929 when it became the first ski area in Michigan. Over the years we have been recognized as; Grayling Winter Sports Park, Bear Mountain and now Hanson Hills Recreation Area. In the late 50’s to early 70’s the building we currently recognize as our “LODGE” building was constructed as a warming area for winter sports enthusiasts. The theme of “using what you have” as donated material and labor were used to construct multiple additions to the lodge, transforming it from a simple warming area into functioning lodge with restrooms, offices, and a concessions area. In most recent years we have been progressive on adding an ADA compliant restroom, along with making necessary repairs and maintenance to an aging building, while keeping that nostalgic feel of the ski lodge that so many of us remember as generation after generation of youth have passed through. Time is catching up to this remarkable building, and we are hoping to preserve what we have, so that we can continue to provide the many programs, events, and recreational opportunities to Crawford County residents and Visitors. Our lodge needs the following repairs to help bring us out of a deteriorating stage, Siding, Windows/Doors, and Roof are the main areas of concern. We are kindly asking for community support to help accomplish our project goals. Total project cost is $295,766 and we are asking for community support in form of a 1 year “one and done” Millage to expedite these repairs.
How can you help to preserve the Lodge? Join the Hanson Hills Lodge Preservation Committee. Help us spread the word of how Hanson Hills (Grayling Recreation Authority) has impacted you, your kids, your grandchildren, share the memories, help us inform the community of what our preservation project is all about. To join, call 989-348-9266. Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday September 13th 6:30pm @ Hanson Hills.

Project Scope:
• Replacement of Lodge Siding
• Replacement of Lodge Windows
• Replacement of Lodge Roof

1-year Millage:
• $295,766 (1 year Millage Proposal- November Ballot 2018)

What will this cost me? ($ .50 per $1,000 taxable value)
$50,000 taxable value = $25 (1yr)
$110,000 taxable value= $55 (1yr)
$250,000 taxable value= $125 (1yr)

Today’s rain

Arthur Levitan looks like a project for you!

Memories thru the 50's and 60's of this wonderful place. It was the weekend go to place.Hope the millage passes. Very special facility.

I don't understand how this cost this much siding doors windows and a roof?? I'm sure people would volunteer time to get this accomplished definitely a good cause just seems like you could build a whole new Lodge for that price Im not knocking the idea of fixing the old girl up It just seems way over priced!

Tear down, disposal of waste materials, insulation, and who knows what is under the siding, in the rafters and walls, permits and code......I spent alot of years out there, ran the ski school and patrol. Would be great to see it fixed up

Justin Andre, I personally will donate to help with renovations. I'm sure that there are a lot of people who have great memories there that would donate. I shall send a check directly to you for this. Maybe I could encourage others to do the same with permission.

I’m curious with the building be as old as it is...who’s to say there’s no asbestos and will end up costing even more? And have you priced demolishing and just starting new?? That price does seem pretty high! Don’t get me wrong, I have MANY memories there!! I spent every minute I could from 2nd grade through to high school skiing and racing! But looking at the big picture, that’s a lot of money.

We need the community to get behind this

Absolutely, Betty Bennett! I'm in!

You know what they say, a family that skis together stays together! Thanks @trileyoutdoors for the great shot. #xclife #adventurekids #isitskiseasonyet ... See MoreSee Less
